Mother and Son

Black bear sow and cub (c) John Ashley
Mother and son stop eating grass to watch more cars approach
Black bears were out in the open this morning, grazing on the first green, roadside grass. This is when it's critical that the rangers scare them away, before the tourists arrive. A handful of chips or half a sandwich, tossed out the car window, is almost always a death sentence for a roadside bear. Don't approach and don't feed. When there aren't other people on the road, I do what the rangers do - rev the engine while honking the horn and yelling. You just might save a cute cub's life that way.
